Image: The plaque on the upper left side of the pedestal reads: "Maternidad" / Obra del escultor Fernando Botero / donada a la ciudad ciudad por / TeleCable / Febrero 1996 ["Maternity" / Work by the sculptor Fernando Botero / donated to the city by / TeleCable / February 1996]. This monumental bronze statue is located in the most central and important public square in Oviedo, the capital of the Spanish province of Asturias. You can guess at its size by oting that the 5'9" professor-photographer is hold the camera at eye level and pointing pretty levelly at the statue. This square and its prominent statue are surrounded by the elegant city park, two major hotels, a bank building, a truly elegant café, which you must patronize: the Corte de Pelayo, named for the national hero whose 718 victory began the eight-century-long Christian reconquest of the Iberian peninsula from the Muslim conquerors (711 - 1492).
