Comments: A view of Rio's (Catholic) Catedral Metropolitana on Avenida Chile (1976). When Brazil decided to move its capital from Rio de Janeiro to the new city of Brasília in the country's interior, Rio was "compensated" by the loss of being the seat of national government with the "gift" of a brand new cathedral; i.e., the one you see pictured here. The cathedral stands next to the headquarters of Petrobras. The cathedral is a monumental cone-shaped structure in hypermodern style; it holds 20,000 people. On the two embedded pages, we shall observe another view of the cathedral's exterior and photographs of its stunningly modern interior: => Rio #22a, #22b, #22c.
Humanities Questions: What does this building's exterior suggest to you, a nuclear power plant, a pyramid, or something else? In what way is this cathedral a modern version of the great Catholic cathedrals or religious buildings of other religions?
