Comment: These two signs appear on the base of the statue of Cristo Redentor. The bronze plaque on the left says: On October 2, 1931, while Getúlio Vargas was President of the Republic and Dom Sebastião Leme was Cardenal Archbishop, this statue of Christ the Redeemer was erected. It is the work of the engineering architect Heitor da Silva Costa; it was designed by Carlos Oswald; it was sculpted by Paul Landowski; overall supervisor of construction was engineer Heitor Levy; and the producer was engineer Pedro Fernandes Vianna da Silva. On October 12, 1981, President of the Republic, João Figueiredo; Secretary of Agriculture, Amaury Stabile; and Cardenal Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Dom Eugènio Sales; together they commemorated the fifhtieth anniversary of its inauguration. The sign on the right says: His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, on July 2, 1980, blessed the city of Rio de Janeiro from this monument.
