Comment: This is a view of the fishing port of Manaus (o porto de desembarque de pescado de Manaus). In part Manaus is quite atypical of the Brazilian interior because it ignores the surrounding forest while thriving on federal subsities, its status as a duty-free city, and a new increase in tourism. In the early 20th century, Manaus was known as a Art Nouveau center; in the late 20th century it thrived on cheap electronics; but now Manaus is engaged in an ambitious renovation program with an eye on its architectural and cultural centers.
