Comments: These gold-covered columns are on the right side of the high altar (altar mor) in the Igreja de São Francisco de Assis (Church of St. Francis of Assisi) in Ouro Preto. The church was built in 1766, and it is considered Aleijadinho's masterpiece. The polychrome bas relief statues at the bottom of the column are also the work of Aleijadinho. This style is late Baroque or exhuberant Rococo. As you can see there is both elegance and horror vacui in this style.
