Comments: Souza Carneiro (born, Brazil, 1854) was a Brazilian artist who painted within the system of European-style art academies. In the case of this artist, it was the Academia de Belas Artes do Porto in Portugal. From Portugal he went to Paris and then to Italy, where he studied the great Renaissance masters. The style and subject matter of the painting (the descent of Christ from the cross surrounded by his followers) demonstrates the continuation of long-standing colonial themes.
