Comments: Almeida Júnior studied in the art academy in Rio de Janeiro (Academia Imperial de Belas Artes) before going to Paris several times during his life. This painting shows centers on the artist's own profession in a realist-romantic style. Brazilian artists more than Spanish-American artists exercised the freedom they encountered to paint nudes. Here the theme is handled gently.
