Image: The hacienda was founded by Pedro Páez Izital, who got the land in a grant from the king of Spain, Carlos V, in 1534. As you can tell by his hybrid name, Pedro Páez Izital was a pre-conquest native noble leader who, because he had allied with the Spaniards, was rewarded by being made the cacique (chief) of Amecameca. Clearly, you can see the pristine restored state of the hacienda at it appears in the early 21st century. The hacienda was restored under the aegis of Mexico's great national INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History).
Humanities question: Can you imagine Juana Inés as a young girl in this environment?
