Comments: Here you see two views (the one on the right was taken with a 500 mm telephoto lens) of Montevideo taken from a park on the far side of the bay. Montevideo is the capital and largest city (1,400,000) of Uruguay (population: 3,500,000). Generally speaking, Montevideo has the reputation of being one of the most "livable" cities in Latin America. It was founded in 1726 as a defensive fortress opposite Buenos Aires to guard the entrance to the Río de la Plata. Also, as you see especially in the photo on the right, Montevideo from the beginning and continuing in the present has been a major shipping port. Nowadays, there are elegant high rises and condos lining the popular beaches in the Pocitos neighborhood of Montevideo.
