Image and Comments: Standing with our back to the church and looking over the ruins with apartment buildings in the background, we see this sign, which stands witness to the ferocious last battle between the Spanish conquistadors under Hernán Cortés and the Aztec (tenochca and tlatelolca) warriors who were defending their homeland for the last time.
Translation: On August 13, 1521, heroically defended by Cuauhtémoc, Tlatelolco fell into the hands of Hernán Cortés. It was neither a triumph nor a defeat. It was the painful birth of the mestizo people who make up today's Mexico.
