View: Looking southeast from a lookout on Mt. Royal toward the St. Lawrence River (St. Laurent). Comments: With a population of 1,700,000 (2016) Montréal (> "mount royal" in French) is the largest city in Québec province in Canada. (Toronto is the largest city with a population of 2,600,000.) Predominantly French-speaking, it's located on an island in the Saint Lawrence River. The backdrop for the city's early years is Mt. Royal, but it's modern development has spilled to all sides around mountain with three peaks. Key neighbourhoods include the old historical quarter, the French colonial Vieux-Montréal–with monumental cathedral of Notre-Dame Basilica at its core; the industrial Sud-Ouest (southwest) and artist quarter, the Platea. Of course, Montréal has a major commercial port with sea-faring ships and barges. As you see from this one view of Montreal it is a fully modern metropolis.
