Comments
: The title and the painting refer to Dante Alighieri (1265-1361) who composed the Divine Comedy between 1308 and 1320. This work by Dante is generally considered one of the greatest masterpieces of world literature and is perhaps the greatest work composed in Italian, despite the fact that it is a late medieval / early Renaissance work in rhymed tercetes in three large and equal parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso. Gauvreau honors Dante as one of his chosen "Unsubmitted" in this piece because Dante was an outspoken social and political activist who was exiles for his activism despite the fact (or because he was?) that he was a famous and reverred humanist.
Humanities Questions: (A) To which of the three parts of the Divine Comedy-- Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso--do you think it is most like Gauvreau is referring in this work? (B) Describe the effect he achieves and the artistic means he uses to achieve that effect, if not, indeed, a strong message.
