Comments: Frida Kahlo was born in this house in 1907. Her complete name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón--Kahlo from her father and Calderón from her mother. Her father, who was known as Guillermo Kahlo (1872-1941) in Mexico, was born in Germany as Carl Wilhelm Kahlo. Apparently, Frida thought her father was of Jewish ancestry, but recently this has been disputed; the current thinking is that his ancestors were German Lutherans. Frida's mother, Matilde Calderón y González, was a devout Mexican Catholic of indigenous Mexican and Spanish ancestry. Frida was one of four full sisters and two half sisters. Coyoacán is an upper middle class neighborhood (delegación or colonia) on the south side of Mexico City. Coyoacán features many fine restaurants, cantinas (bars), a movie theaters, cafés, street musicians, tourists of all kinds, and an active artist colony.
