Diego Rivera (1)

Image: This is the house in which Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was born in Guanajuato, México, and in which he lived until 1896, when he became an art student at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City. (For notes on this arts academy see: <= Late 18th century notes.) You see several school children returning from school in front of his house, which is now a museum dedicated to him.
Comments: He came from a converso family (Spanish Sephardic Jews who converted to Catholicism). His father, Diego Rivera, was a liberal school teacher. His mother, María Barrientos de Rivera, was also a teacher, but when Diego's twin brother died in infancy, she became a midwife.
