México City (28)

Comments: The Estadio Olímpico was built in 1952-1954 by several Mexican architects, a sports manager, and a university professor. The stadium's style is inspired by a volcanic crater with volcanic rock and a diameter of about 300 yards. The façade (see detail in: => Mexico City #28a) is a polychrome high relief sculpture by Diego Rivera (!!!) titled La Universidad, la familia mexicana, la paz y la juventud deportista (The University, Mexican family, peace, and youth in sports). It is realized with a mosaic of colored stones. In 1968, this stadium was modernized to house the world's XIX Olympic Games. Seating capacity is 56,800, and it is the venue for track and field and the UNAM's soccer (fútbol) team, the Pumas.
Humanities topic: Combining this wide angle image and the close-up detail (=>Mexico City #28a), reflect in a brief paragraph on the fact that the decoration for this sports stadium was created by Diego Rivera. Comment especially on the details that illustrate the title of the sculpture.
