Chapultepec (10)

Source: WTL photograph taken in Chapultepec Park, Mexico City.
Comments: These five bronze statues and the one just behind the photographer are placed on the edge of Chapultepec Hill at the location where the six heroic cadets jumped to their deaths on September 13, 1847, rather than surrender to the invading U.S. forces in what is known as the Battle of Chapultepec. Rather than retreat as their generals Nicolás Bravo and José Mariano Monterde had ordered them, they wrapped themselves in the Mexican flag to keep it from falling into the enemy's hands. The six boy cadets are:

  • Juan de la Barrera
  • Juan Escutia
  • Francisco Márquez
  • Agustín Melgar
  • Fernando Montes de Oca
  • Vicente Suárez
