Image: "The Roundhouse" (1929) by Gabriel Fernández Ledesma (1900-83). Oil on canvas.
Comments: Fernández Ledesma was a man of many talents and pursuits including writing, painting, engraving, sculpture, and education. In 1920 the great Mexican philosopher and educator José Vasconcelos commissioned him to create designs for Talavera church tiles. He served in the same capacity as a Mexican artist in Rio de Janeiro (1922), Paris (1938), and Spain (1929). He was also a founding member of the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios, whose members included Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and many more. Among the many awards he earned were two Guggenheim Fellowships.
