Image: "Flower Seller" (1916), by Alfredo Ramos Martínez (1871-1946). Pastel on paper on canvas.
Comments: Ramos Martínez studied art in Paris from 1900 to 1910. There he learned the late Impression French painting technique of using natural light to capture an atmospheric feeling. Returning to Mexico at the start of the Mexican Revolution, you can see that he is using seemingly Mexican themes, yet revolutionary upheavals are nowhere to be seen.
Humanities Question
s: (A) What is your feeling about this painting in and of itself; that is, disregarding the socio-historical context? (B) How representative do you think this painting is of "modern art during the Mexican Revolution"?
