Notes: The professor-photographer (WTL) flew to Mérida, capital of Yucatán, México (see the map in #1) via a change of airplanes at the Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez in Mexico City. Mérida is the capital of the State of Yucatán, and it is an exemplary Spanish colonial city. The city is 22 miles from the Gulf of México. Its population is about 970,000 (2016). As you can see on this map, Mérida is surrounded by ancient Mayan sites. There are more than 2,000,000 native speakers of various dialects of the Mayan language in México, most of them in the Yucatán. Mérida, the capital city, however, is 99% Spanish-speaking.
