Notes: This is a funerary mask, which was found in a burial crypt in the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque, in Chiapas, southern México. It is from the late Classic Mayan period, some time after 692. You can see this mask, which is made out of jade, mother-of-pearl, and obsidian, in the Museo Nacional de Antropología, in Mexico City. You saw a photo of this museum in the Opening Slide Show (<= #66 and #67).
