Here are eight images of the 7.0 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital and much of the rest of the country on January 12, 2010. Over 50,000 people died directly during the earthquake, over 2,000,000 people (25% of Haiti's population) were rendered homeless, and many died in the aftermath due to the fact that Haiti, the Western Hemisphere's poorest country, had virtually no infrastructure capable of coping with a disaster of this magnitude. The world community, especially the United States, sent in massive assistance as quickly as possible, but arrival of aid was delayed tragically because the seaport and the roads were damaged so severely that they were nearly useless.
