Tikal (27)

Comments: In the background one sees scaffolding for one of many ongoing restoration projects at Tikal. In the foreground, one sees a the chopped-off trunk of an old tree atop a root-covered mound of dirt and weeds. This photo gives us an idea of what happened to the entire city-state of Tikal after the Maya abandoned the site ca. 900. Secondarily, it indicates the tremendous challenge archeologists face when they attempt to, first, literally, uncover the ruins, and, second, restore them.
