Comments: The town of Flores (pop. 24,000 in 2008), which is the capital of the Petén Department of Guatemala, fills the small Isla de Flores. When the Spanish conquered this town—when it was called Tayasal by the Itzá Mayas—in 1697, the conquistadors razed the Mayan town and all its pyramids and gradually built this now charming colonial town on top of the ruins.
Humanities question: Same as the question in Petén 5.
