Comment: Another very famous place (farther west) on Calle Ocho is the Versailles Restaurant, or just The Versailles, at 3555 SW Eighth St. (There are also five other branches of this restaurant in the Los Angeles area.) The name actually refers to Cuban colonial prosperity following the Treaty of Versailles in 1763, the same year that Florida became British territory. As far as I know it was founded after 1967. It is as famous for its Cuban cuisine as it is for it central place among influential Cuban-American political figures. It features a cafeteria, restaurant, bakery, takeout window, and banquet rooms. Among the famous Cuban dishes it features are moros (black beans), palomilla (sirloin steak with mashed garlic, onions and parsley), maduros (sauteed sweet plantains), and tasajo (jerked beef with garlic, onion, pepper, paprika, bay leaves and more). For a view of the featured Versailles sandwich itself, with the professor-photographer ordered when he visited, see: => Calle Ocho #9a.
