Comments: Here you see a Cuban lifting the hood of his 1950's Chevrolet talking to two tourists in Old Havana. He is not only showing off his car but, when the professor-photographer was walking by and snapped this photo, some kind of sales event was in process. According to journalist Barry Spyker of the Miami Herald, there are 60,000 pre-1959 automobiles in Cuba, and most of them still function. Quoting from a book by Richard Schweid (Che's Chevrolet, Fidel's Oldsmobile: On the Road in Cuba, 2004), Spyker asks: "What in the world keeps them running when there have been no new parts coming into Cuba since 1960 and no junkyards to scavenge? ‘Cuban genius,’ Schweid said during an interview with the publisher, The University of North Carolina Press. That, and an ‘ability to make do, to be innovative and tremendously resourceful, and a great respect for the cars. Necessity has demanded much [from] the people and the cars, and both have been up to the task,’ he said."
