Comments: The Jardín Botánico de Cienfuegos was founded by Eduard Atkins in 1901. This New Englander owned huge sugar plantations in in and around the area where the botanical garden is located near the cities of Cienfuegos and Trinidad. He contracted Harvard professors of botany to aid him in the cultivation of sugarcane. Until 1959 Harvard controlled the garden, which was one of the best in Latin America. Since 1959 Cuban national Academy of Science’s Institute of Botany runs the place.
