Comment: Jean Ribaut (or Ribault), a French Huguenot (Protestant), first landed at the site of the Ribaut Monument in 1562. His name for the St. John's River was the Rivière de Mai, because he landed in May, 1562, and then ordered a column erected claiming the entire region for the king of France, Charles IX. Fort La Caroline was founded as a Huguenot settlement and fort in 1564 by René Goulaine de Laudonnière.
