Comments: On this plaza, which was created in its current form in 1884, is located the Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, which is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Buenos Aires. This plaza honors the place where, first, Juan de Garay founded the town in 1580, and, second, on May 25, 1810, Argentinian patriots signed a resolution that led to that nation's independence. The small monument in the center of the Plaza de Mayo was created in 1811 commemorating the independence of the Provinces of the Rio de la Plata.
