Comments: Garay (1528-1583) was born in the Basque region in Spain. He went first to Perú in 1543 as a conquistador, and later (1568) he went to Asunción, Paraguay, where, 1576 became the governor. He more or less served the cause of peace between Spanish colonists and the native Guaraní people. In 1580 he founded the settlement on the Río de la Plata that would come to be known as Buenos Aires. He died in 1583 when he and twelve of his men, a Franciscan friar, and several women were killed by Querandí natives.
