Rio de Janeiro (5)

Comments: Like this picture-postcard photo, Copacabana Beach is not a chic as it once was, but it remains a beautiful place to sunbathe. This place gained international fame starting in the 1920s (until 1946) when the ritzy Copacabana Palace Hotel opened and when gambling was legalized in Brazil. Among the thousands of rich and famous who visited here were John F. Kennedy, Orson Welles, Marlene Dietrich, Ali Khan, Eva Perón, and Lana Turner. On a hot summer day, as many as a half million sun bathers descend on Copacaban Beach. Nowadays, Ipanema Beach is considered more posh.
