Tula (5)

Comments: The stone statues at the top are 15 feet high, and they probably once served as pillars supporting a highly decorated roof. The ruler (historical or legendary or demi-god) of this city for over three decades (or longer) was Topiltzin Quetzalcóatl (968-1000). Tula/Tollan was rich and powerful because, for two and half centuries, it was the principal commercial, mining, and manufacturing city in central Mexico until it was burned down by the Otomíes and Chichimecas in 1168. (Note: Quetzalcóatl later went to Chichén Itzá.)
