Cuilcuilco (3)

Notes: This photo gives you a small idea of the physical context in which the Cuicuilco pyramid is located. Here we are looking north from the parking lot next to the site. The name "Cuicuilco" means "place of song and dance" and/or "the place of many colors". The mountain in the background is the Xitle volcano, whose eruption caused the inhabitants of Cuicuilco to leave the area around 100 BCE. From here the survivors went north, past the Valley of Anáhuac (Tenochtitlan had not yet been settled by the Aztecs) to a valley where the survivors of the Xitle eruption founded Teotihuacan.
