Comment: Here is a close-up of the left (western?) side of the mappa mundi detailing the Spanish islands of the Caribbean and the mysterious illumination (picture) of a large standing figure where the Isthmus of Panama would be but for the fact that neither Columbus, or Juan de la Cosa, nor any other European (as far as is known) had ever coasted there.
Humanities questions: (A) Why depict a large human figure in that unknown space? (B) Why not just leave it blank? (C) Describe details in the image as best as you can. (Note: on the next page, it is shown enlarged and upright, as it were.)
