LA LENGUA DE LA ASIGNATURA: el español.

(1) to explore the entertaining and complex artistic universe that Cervantes created when he wrote Parts I and II of his novel Don Quixote, and (2) to learn about the author, the social commentary, and historical context which serve as backdrops and inspirational sources for this novel in two books. The primary goal is to experience the work as directly as possible as seventeenth-century Spaniards may have read or heard the novel read to them. Therefore, your primary task is to commit yourself to a schedule of regular, intensive reading, and to ENJOY THE BOOK. The course's secondary goal is to acquire objective knowledge about Golden Age Spain (the XVI and XVII centuries), Cervantes as a person, and various critical tools that will enrich your reading of this major literary text. The means for attaining this goal are attention to class lectures and demonstrations; participation in class discussions; and attentive reading. Above all, Don Quixote is a work of literature that is as inspirational as it is entertaining. The course will be successful when you feel that you have been instructed, inspired, and entertained—by Cervantes and by interaction with all members of the course community.
